integrated cal, todo list, journal, inbox
For the greater part of the past decade, I’ve struggled with having a busy schedule, while at the same time being surprised at how little I actually get done.
I came across various productivity systems such as the Getting Things Done method, or bullet journaling. But out of everything I learned from them, there’s one thing that helped streamline my schedule more than all the others.
During the course of a week, my todo list of ~40 items that had been sitting there for months was cut nearly in half.
There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning with a large overdue todo list. The todos pile up and become burdensome just by the sheer number of them.
One day I thought enough is enough. I took my whole list of todos and my weekly calendar and went to battle. I applied the well known divide and conquer strategy. I split my todo list into small chunks and began plugging each of them into my calendar: these get done this Monday, those on Tuesday, those on Wednesday, etc… The result was fantastic.
Even without managing to complete 100% of them each day, half my todo list quickly melted away.
It turns out that planning a the whole week at a time makes you far more productive than leaving your todo list to spontaneous impulses.
